☆ ADL gives Harvard and a dozen other universities failing grades on campus antisemitism

New York CNN —The Anti-Defamation League has graded 85 American universities for their policies to protect Jewish students from antisemitism on campus. The ADL said antisemitic incidents on campus have reached historic levels, leaving Jewish students feeling unsafe. The dozen schools that received failing grades from the ADL include Harvard, MIT, Stanford, University of Chicago, Princeton, University of Virginia, Tufts, Michigan State University, University of Massachusetts Amherst, SUNY Purchase, SUNY Rockland, and Swarthmore. Harvard remains under federal investigation for potential Title VI violations, and several Jewish students have sued Harvard for failing to protect them from antisemitism. “Like all students, Jewish students deserve to feel safe and supported on campus.”Hamas’ October 7, 2023, attack on Israel left 1,200 dead, and hundreds of Israelis were taken hostage.

☆ Co-Chair of Harvard Antisemitism Task Force Resigns

The co-chair of a task force set up by Harvard University to combat antisemitism resigned on Sunday, the second high-profile resignation in the university’s efforts to address complaints that Jewish students have felt increasingly uncomfortable on campus since the Hamas attack of Oct. 7. “Basically her conclusion is that she didn’t feel confident or satisfied that she could lead and influence this process in a way that made sense to her,” said Rabbi Hirschy Zarchi of Harvard Chabad, a Jewish campus organization. He said that he had spoken with several people with knowledge of Dr. Sadun’s thinking. A nationally prominent rabbi, David Wolpe, resigned from a previous antisemitism advisory committee in early December, after widely criticized testimony about campus antisemitism before Congress by the former Harvard president, Claudine Gay. “Both events on campus and the painfully inadequate testimony reinforced the idea that I cannot make the sort of difference I had hoped,” he wrote on X at the time.

☆ Harvard antisemitism official abruptly resigns from new task force

New York CNN —The co-chair of a newly formed task force fighting antisemitism at Harvard University has abruptly stepped down after barely a month at the helm. The Harvard Jewish Alumni Alliance, which the Globe said is leading the campaign, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. When Garber announced the presidential task force on antisemitism, he tapped Sadun and Harvard professor Derek Penslar to co-chair it. Penslar remains on the presidential task force, after receiving significant internal and external support. The rest of the antisemitism task force is being filled out by various students, professors and administrators at Harvard.

Both parents were Jews who had left Ukraine early in the century with their families to escape the tsarist pogroms. His mother, who was known as Rae, was an operating room nurse; his father worked a variety of low-paying jobs. After graduating from Senn High School on Chicago’s North Side in 1953, Mr. Friedkin took a job in the mailroom of the local television station WGN. Within a few years he had worked his way up to director, turning out hundreds of shows, from “Bozo’s Circus” to live performances of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, as well as documentaries. His documentary work coincided with the advent of portable cameras, a decisive influence on his style.

I have had a privileged view of the human condition, and the essential place of religion on that hard road. Where else do people sing together week after week? I know the percentage of those who not only call themselves religious but also find themselves in religious communities declines each year. I have seen families receive meals for weeks, and in one case for years, after a loss. I have seen one child pick another up on the sports field and I have seen couples find their way back to one another after estrangements.
